What is a certified lactation consultant and why do I need one?

A certified lactation consultant is someone who has taken classes and a skills and knowledge exam with either ALPP (Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice) or with IBLC (International Board of Lactation Consultants).

They are trained to evaluate latch issues, help resolve other breastfeeding issues, and offer support to the parents in their decisions concerning the feeding of their child.

Why someone may need a lactation consultant varies… but the underlying reason is…as natural as breastfeeding is..it doesn’t always come naturally to either the parent or the infant.

I am a mom of 6, a Certified Lactation Consultant, and doula. I am hoping to be a midwife in the future.
